not JUST passion. profit.
The Arts Are the Economy You're Not Tracking
I didn't build my career in the arts by asking for support. I built it the same way I built my career in corporate sales — by making the revenue case, measuring outcomes, and delivering results.
For decades, arts organizations have been underfunded not because they lack value, but because no one was translating that value into language that funders, corporations, and city planners could act on. I spent 20 years doing exactly that in boardrooms for Frito-Lay, Hostess, Dr Pepper, and M&M Mars. Then I brought that same discipline into the arts — and everything changed.
This keynote gives your organization the framework to stop asking for support and start making the economic argument. The arts produce the workforce skills, cultural competency, and community infrastructure that every employer and city planner says they need. It's time to measure it, communicate it, and fund it accordingly.
Audience Takeaways:
A reframe of the arts from passion project to measurable economic and workforce asset
A clear framework for communicating arts value to funders, cities, and corporations
Practical language for making the revenue case for creative workforce development
A new lens on audience diversity as a revenue strategy, not just a values statement

two worlds. one voice.
Before Sandra Bassett ever led an arts organization, she managed territories and hit revenue targets for Frito-Lay, Hostess, Dr Pepper, and M&M Mars. For more than 20 years as a Regional Sales Director, she learned what it means to turn strategy into profit — and that foundation never left her.
When she made the transition into arts leadership, she became CEO of the Phoenix Center for the Arts and then the West Valley Arts Council. What she found was an ecosystem full of extraordinary talent and chronic underinvestment. So she got to work.
"I didn't leave the business world to enter the arts. I brought the business world with me."
Today Sandra serves as Development and Donor Engagement Manager at the Chandler Center for the Arts, leads PHX BIPOC Arts — connecting BIPOC artists with professional opportunities and business education — and chairs the East Valley Ebony Collective. She holds an MBA from Walden University.
Sandra is also a jazz performer, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist — piano, organ, and alto saxophone. She has performed internationally, opened for The Temptations, and played the national anthem at Phoenix Suns and Mercury games. She leads the Motown Experience Tribute Band and directs the Sounds Academy Youth Motown Band.

LEADERSHIP, VISION, AND COMMUNITY IMPACT
THE BUSINESS OF THE ARTS & CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
CULTURE, MUSIC, & THE POWER OF BLACK CREATIVE TRADITIONS
Real leadership isn't a framework — it's a practice. This topic explores what it actually takes to build inclusive organizations, sustain influence across industries, and lead through change when resources are limited and the stakes are high. From navigating corporate hierarchies to building community institutions, this conversation gives audiences practical tools for leading with purpose, building diverse teams, and creating lasting impact.
The creative economy is one of the most powerful and least understood workforce pipelines in America. This topic gives artists, arts organizations, and the businesses that work alongside them a concrete business vocabulary — revenue models, audience building, professional presence, and the economic case for investing in creative talent. It connects the dots between artistic work and economic value in language that both sides of the table can act on.
Jazz, Gospel, and Motown didn't just define American music — they shaped American identity, fueled social movements, and built economic ecosystems that still influence culture today. This topic traces that legacy through history, culture, and live musical experience, giving audiences a deeper understanding of Black creative traditions and their ongoing relevance to community, commerce, and social change. It is equal parts education and experience — and it stays with you long after the room clears.
